Nashville Social Enterprise: Isabella Water

About Isabella Water:

According to their website, “Isabella Water is a socially conscious water company founded on the principle that everyone deserves clean water. We have created a product, Isabella Water stainless steel water bottles, to fund well building projects in Africa and Asia.” (source)

Why It Is Interesting:

  • - Isabella Water takes a common product (a water bottle) and makes it into something more, something that not only serves it’s designed purpose (carry water, reduce plastic water bottle usage/waste), but goes even farther helping to generate funds that will be used to provide clean drinking water to individuals in both Asia and Africa.

The Facts:

  • - In 2008, the US used enough plastic bottles to circle the earth 190 times.
  • - To produce plastic bottles, manufacturers use 17 million barrels of crude oil—it takes 2,000 times more energy to make plastic bottles than to make tap water.
  • - People in Africa spend over 40 billion hours a year walking for water.
  • - Clean water can reduce water-related deaths by 21%, and hand washing by 45%.
  • - Almost a billion people, or 1 in 8, don’t have access to clean water.
  • - 5,500 deaths can be attributed to not having access to clean water—more than hunger, war, AIDS, and natural disasters.
  • - The poorest households may spend up to 11% of their income on access to clean water.

Want to Grow Your Business? Add Scaffolding

The key words here are temporary, support and construction.

Application To Business:

If you are looking to grow your business (construction), you need to surround yourself with people that have the knowledge and resources to get you where you are trying to go (support). Nonprofit Idea: Goodwill Meets Amazon.com

goodwill+amazonlogo

What makes Goodwill so successful? No, it’s not the warm and fuzzy feeling you get by donating your old clothes, or even the tax write-off. It’s the model. They take things people have in abundance, use and then replace. Though sometimes people are replacing these items because their are old and worn out, the majority of the items are perfectly fine. The output of this model is extremely powerful. Through this model, Goodwill is able to create jobs and provide affordable clothing.

After studying their model, I identified something they were missing. Books.

If you know someone at Goodwill, please share this with them. I would be more than happy to dig into it a little deeper with them!

The Business Idea:
- Focus on collecting books and selling them both online and in retail stores.

The Goal:
- Job creation for the less fortunate
- Affordable, high quality books for the masses

The Magic:
- Cost of inventory is essentially zero
- Reduced nonprofit mailing rates when shipping books pads profits
- Using the internet for online sales allows for the scaling of sales
- Selling books that do not meet quality standards to paper recyclers to generate additional revenue

Potential Partners
- Churches & Schools — Book Drives
- Goodwill — Retail Partnership
